Fiji 2009
Found an old journal and within it I wrote blog style posts while on my round the world trip so I thought I'd copy them into this blog. From Vancouver we flew to Fiji.
3rd stop - Fiji
Wave of heat. Clouds of mosquitoes. Nadi Bay Hotel. Celebrating New Years with a funny/sleazy kiwi man and Sna. Creepy man in room 7 who will wait for me for sexy time - American style... wonder if he's still waiting. Cocktails. Spending three hours swimming in the pool with a German guy and an Alaskan army dude. Prim and proper frogs everywhere. First bikini waxes. Cats joining us for dinner, perching behind us on our chairs. Constant dampness from sweat, sunscreen, insect repellent, pool water, seawater and rain. One lousy fan. Anti-itch cream. The ultimate lei. Being barefoot for a solid two weeks.
Sunshine at Coralview. Crab races (no. 3 always wins). Drunk Australians...Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi! Playing shithead. Comparing insect bites. Lazing in hammocks eating coconut. Lying in the sea. Rice. Very salty pasta. Awesome Adventures awesome boat ride (it was so rocky). Hurricane season. Me and Courtney: woo! It's like a rollercoaster everyone else: bluergh I feel sick. Pale/green faces leeched of tan. Impressing the Fijians with my good, steady sea legs.
Wanna Taki boat cruise. Hot (luke warm) showers. Air conditioning. Movies. Rain. Lots of rain. Huddled under blankets in the freezing air con. No mosquitoes! Snorkelling in the rain = zero visibility. Scuba diving cancelled due to hurricane weather, missing out on playing with the dive masters "pet" baby reef shark. Awesome Adventures even more awesome boat ride (it was extra rocky). Being hated (with this guy called Stuart) for enjoying it while everyone else threw up. Being made to come inside in case we were thrown overboard and swept away by the sea and wind.
Kauta. Rain, rain and more rain. Stranded for an extra night. Power cut. Water cut. Shithead, rummy, golf, wolf, blackjack and poker. Reading, lots. Book swaps. Zero electricity and zilch running water. Fiji gold (best beer). Singing along to a guitar in the kerosene lamplight. When the kava makes you suffer, when the brandy makes you randy, when the wine makes you fine, when the saints come marching in. Woo woo woo sweet child o' mine. Wonderwall (the 1 song everyone - Fijians, Australians, Europeans etc knew all the lyrics too). Rice, rice and more rice. More salty pasta. Dry potatoes. Sleeping through double doors banging by my bunk. Waking up at 4:30am to a tighty whitied ass near my head (as he tried to get the doors shut) and a spider inside my net...don't know which was scarier. Rum and coke in a can. Barman named Happy - rightly so. Trees swept away. Waves as tall as buildings. Coconut water straight from a coconut. Toilet trips by torchlight, cards by candlelight. Stumbling in the dark, Swiss-German guys who "couldn't of made it without me" (back to the dorm after one too many). Who's line is it anyway with 2 halfs of a coconut and a banana. Great people making the (slightly) crappy situation fun.
Flooded mainland. Kitten dubbed cyclone. Cinnamon French toast. Cheap massages. First time Flip flop wearer - with a broken toe. Blocked bank cards. Dial up Internet. Pizza down the road. Warm puddles. Pink sunsets. Mayhem at the airports, running for our flight.
Wouldn't change any of the chaos... except diving with the shark...and the 150+ mosquito (and other insect) bites.
