Whole30 - The beginning
I'm currently on day 4 of the whole30 elimination diet and as I'm filled with rage (hormonal related as well diet related as I'm day 1 of something else) I thought I'd share my experience, i'll write as i go along.
First let me explain what the whole30 is, basically you eliminate dairy, legumes, grains, alcohol, all sugar and all processed foods from your diet for 30 days and then reintroduce them gradually to see how your body reacts to them. I get bloated regularly and I'm never too sure on the cause so thought this would help. The Aussie one and myself have been eating pretty poorly recently, lots of oven foods (chicken goujons, garlic bread etc) and take-out, so decided to "reset" our mind sets and relationship to food. We are both hoping to the lose weight during this process but my main goal is to become healthier and energised (also you aren't allowed to weigh yourself). Basically its paleo (meat, veg and fruit) without being allowed to make imitation pancakes (banana and eggs) or bread etc. We aren't allowed to make 'treats' with compliant foods as that defeats the purpose of trying to re-wire our brains.
Day 1 - I woke feeling well rested and ready to start...our cupboards and fridge were basically empty as we gave all the food we can't have to friends to get rid of temptation. Without much to cook with, I made myself some scrambled eggs with some garlic. As we didn't have much, the Aussie one went to work on an empty stomach and didn't take anything with him. I knew he was super hungry and likely to become hangry so I had roast veg and chicken waiting for him when he walked through the door.
Day 2 & 3 - This phase is known as the "hang-over". I certainly felt that way, Day 2 also happened to be my first day back at the gym and work since before Christmas. I had a dull headache for both days and broke a sweat super easily (being summer in Australia doesn't help much). Meals included eggs, veg and chicken. Both nights I had very vivid dreams - but that's not unusual for me - food being a major feature is though.
Day 4 - Woke up feeling crampy and irritable. Didn't want eggs for breakfast for the 4th day in a row, so I had a turkey burger (made the night before by the Aussie one) with zucchini (courgette for everyone back in Scotland), spinach and garlic (all my meals include garlic). I was feeling lazy at lunch so just had a banana, blueberries and raspberries. The whole30 book refers to the next few days as "kill all the things", and they certainly got that bit right. I'm glad I had the day off, I don't think I would’ve had much patience with my patients. Once the Aussie one got home, we hit the supermarket for a big shop. We were both very irritable in the shop (why do people move so slowly?!?) and it's lucky we didn't kill each other or innocent by-standers. I'm super hungry now, we tried making our own mayo but I ruined it as I was impatient and poured too much oil in at once, its now got garlic in it and we will hopefully use it as salad dressing. I'm super pleased our chicken bites (chicken breast coated in egg, almond meal and spices) and garlicky/lemony/rosemary roast potatoes are in the oven, I can't wait to try them...
Mint, lemon water will have to suffice for the next 4 minutes...
